Construction activities are progressing on the SR 580 (Skinner Boulevard) improvements project from Alt US 19 (Broadway) to Bass Boulevard.

In early December, crews implemented a westbound detour throughout the project and have been working to construct the northern halves of the roundabouts at Douglas Avenue and Highland Avenue. The contractor has successfully installed drill shafts at the Pinellas Trail and Main Street/Bass Boulevard to accommodate future traffic signals that can withstand higher wind capacity speeds. Utility relocations have been ongoing concurrently with other construction activities, including the relocation of fire hydrants and internet/phone lines along Skinner Boulevard. In addition, crews have added new sidewalks on the northern side of Skinner Boulevard and are installing truck aprons that will provide adequate space for large vehicles to maneuver each roundabout.

The current detour is to remain in place through mid-March. The contractor will then implement the eastbound detour to allow the construction of the southern halves of the roundabouts.

This Complete Streets project includes reducing travel lanes, additional on street parking, constructing two roundabouts, and adding a multipurpose path connecting to the Pinellas Trail making it safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. The $9.2 million project is expected to finish in early 2026.
